Riverfront respite at Savannah hotel

It’s easy to lose track of time watching life go by from the balconies of Savannah, Ga.’s new Cotton Sail Hotel.

Groups of visitors laugh and chatter while exploring the city’s riverfront walkway and cobblestone streets, and tugboats and tankers slowly cruise by on the Savannah River.

Housed in a refurbished cotton warehouse that dates to the late-1800s, the 56-room boutique hotel, which opened on May 2, has been painstakingly restored to include modern amenities while still retaining the beauty of the historical building.

The lobby and several guestrooms feature exposed brick from the original structure, and the hardwood floors throughout the building were made from the wooden roof beams that were removed when a sixth floor was added. The modest-size rooms all feature extremely comfortable king- or queen-size beds, and each is adorned with a distinct framed photo or print of local scenery or by a local artist.

One of the biggest draws for visitors and guests alike will undoubtedly be all the outdoor space the hotel offers. In front of the building is a spacious wooden deck that will have tables and chairs and drink service, a great spot to relax and admire some of the building’s architectural features, such as the cast iron and brick facade.

Alternatively, guests can head up to the hotel’s rooftop bar, Top Deck, which sports a large, wrap-around balcony affording great views of the river and back toward Savannah’s historical district. Adjacent to the bar is a meetings and events space, which also features balcony access. As the only riverfront rooftop meetings space in Savannah with outdoor access, hotel management anticipates this will be a popular spot for wedding receptions and other events.

Ideal for exploration

Of course, visitors will want to get out and explore all that the city has to offer, for which the Cotton Sail is ideally located.

Guests can head out the front door to explore the city’s historical district, with its 22 city squares, Spanish moss-draped trees and striking architecture. To sample the array of restaurants and bars on River Street, guests will simply need to take the hotel elevator down to the ground level.

The River House Seafood restaurant, offering fresh seafood and local favorites such as shrimp and grits, is housed in the same building as the Cotton Sail and will be providing the room service for the hotel.
